Chilli Dogs
A fun, quick, easy, super delicious Hot Dog supper using either Chilli Con Carne or Vegetarian Lentil Chilli with Black Beans, Sweetcorn and Chick Peas.
A fabulous supper to throw together on any night of the week but I particularly love them on the weekend or as a perfect accompaniment to watching sport on television. I confess though, how anyone can eat these without a knife and fork is beyond me! I would need a full body bib and a shower afterwards!
How to make Chilli Dogs
Although delicious served simply: bread roll, sausage and chilli, these Dogs are even better fully loaded with your favourite toppings. See suggestions below for inspiration.
Collect all your ingredients together:
- finger rolls – I like Brioche finger rolls but just use whatever you like best
- hot dog sausages – I use Bratwurst or you can use your favourite vegetarian alternative
- chilli – either Chilli Con Carne or Vegetarian Chilli
Suggested toppings:
- guacamole or slices of avocado
- salsa or chopped tomatoes
- sour cream
- grated cheese – I use mature cheddar
- chopped coriander
- sliced red chilli
- lime wedges
Assemble the Chilli Dogs:
Before you start, just check how long it takes to heat or cook your chosen sausages. I use pre-cooked Bratwurst and these take only 5 minutes to heat through. If yours take longer, you will need to start them sooner. When you have everything ready, all you need to do is throw it all together:
- Slice down the centre of each bread roll ¾ of the way but not all the way through and lay on a baking tray and warm in a preheated oven for 5 minutes.
- Whilst the rolls are warming, heat your chilli and the sausages, according to packet instructions.
- Prepare any other toppings for your chilli dogs – such as grating some cheese, chopping coriander and/or fresh chillis. We kept it quite simple when we ate these with sour cream, coriander and grated cheese.
- When the rolls are ready all you need to do is fill the bread rolls with the sausages, top with your chosen chilli and then add your prepared toppings.
